TURMERIC – Curcuma longa . Zingiberaceae family

Turmeric is a herbaceous, perennial plant 60cm to 1m high. Its rhizome (root) is light brown and orange-yellow inside. Discreet, pale yellow flowers. This spice is cultivated in tropical Asia, Africa and the West Indies.

Components: Curcuminoids, essential oil, polysaccharides, starch, iron, manganese.

Turmeric, a plant recommended in cases of joint inflammation in horses:

Curcumin, which gives the yellow color to turmeric, has been the subject of numerous studies. This substance has recognized antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Curcuma longa root is traditionally used to soothe sensitive horse joints, particularly in osteoarthritis.

This spice is also beneficial for supporting the horse's digestive system, particularly during stomach pain, digestive discomfort or liver problems.

What to combine turmeric with?

In order to promote better assimilation of curcumin, naturally poorly absorbed by the intestine, it is possible to combine its distribution with black pepper (the piperine contained in black pepper increases intestinal permeability), however be careful with sensitive intestines.
As curcumin is fat-soluble, mixing Curcuma longa powder with a little oil (for example linseed oil) will also promote its assimilation.

For significant joint sensitivity, this spice can be combined with Arthromix, a unique blend of dehydrated plants with soothing, mineralizing and draining properties. As this mixture does not contain harpagophytum, it can be administered without risk to horses with a sensitive stomach.
