Collagen is a building block of bones, joints and cartilage. It protects and maintains joint flexibility and is recommended during growth phases (before 3 years), in cases of intense effort and in senior horses.
Collagens are proteins that occur naturally in the body. A constituent element of bones, joints, cartilage, connective tissues and blood vessels, they represent 30% to 35% of the body's total proteins. In the body, collagen is of three types. Type I is the most abundant and is found in the skin, tendons and bone tissue. Type II is found in cartilage. Finally, type III is found in the muscles and vessel walls.
Collagen protects and maintains joint flexibility. It thus contributes to the vitality and well-being of the horse, ensuring daily joint comfort. It acts preventively on horses under 3 years old. Indeed, as the animal ages, the production of collagen by the body decreases. Its mobility may then be limited and cause joint problems or pain.
Marine collagen hydrolyzate can be given as a supplement to the basic ration and contributes to joint support. It is beneficial in foals whose joints are growing rapidly up to 3 years of age.
Collagen supplementation is also recommended in horses with sustained sporting activity as well as in older horses in order to limit the risk of joint weakening and degeneration.
